Our investment in Type

Create and connect AI Teammates that collaborate with your coworkers across all your tools.

We are excited to announce that Matchstick Ventures has invested in Type.com, a next-generation team communication platform built for the AI era. The way teams work is rapidly changing as agentic workflows and LLMs become embedded in daily operations. Yet team communication tools, most notably Slack, remain fundamentally architected for a pre-AI world, making it difficult for small, fast-moving startups to collaborate seamlessly with intelligent agents and automated workflows. As AI becomes a first-class teammate, teams need a communication layer designed around this new mode of work rather than retrofitted onto legacy infrastructure. Type is built to address this shift head-on, starting with small startups that are most eager to adopt new ways of working.

Type is an AI-native chat product designed from the ground up to support agentic workflows. Rather than treating AI as a bolt-on integration, Type reimagines team chat as an orchestration layer where humans and AI agents collaborate naturally. Once embedded, the product becomes deeply sticky: conversations, context, and integrations accumulate over time, creating meaningful switching costs. The company plans to grow through inbound, product-led adoption, initially targeting early-stage teams before expanding to broader use cases. With a usage-based pricing model and a focus on daily active usage, Type aims to become the default communication tool for teams operating in an AI-first world.

Type is founded by Fletcher Richman, Komran Rashidov, and Alex Campbell, a team with more than a decade of experience building on top of Slack’s platform. The founders previously sold Halp, which we backed in Matchstick Ventures Fund II, to Atlassian, and then led products with millions of users, includingConfluence. They have deep, firsthand knowledge of Slack’s architectural limitations, insights that only come from years of building within the ecosystem. Their technical depth and lived understanding of how team communication breaks down at scale uniquely position them to build a modern alternative designed for what comes next. We’re excited to again partner with the Type team as they work to define the future of team communication in an AI-native workplace.

There is a lot to like here. First and foremost, we’ve worked closely with this team in the past, having been investors in their prior company and seeing what great product thinkers and leaders they are, and how ahead of most trends they tend to be. The opportunity to work with them again was a no-brainer for us. We also love the market opportunity, as AI agents are becoming the norm a native communication layer with agents and humans makes a ton of sense.

This is the first of our new Access investments, which we’ll share more about soon. In short, we occasionally get conviction on a team and an opportunity, but the round or company dynamics don’t align with our core investment strategy ($1-$1.5M at below-$25M valuations based between the coasts). In this specific case, Fletcher and Alex decided to start the company in NYC, which puts it outside our core geos, but they were founders we love and backed previously and were based in Boulder for their last company. The round also was a challenge as they wanted an NYC-based lead investor and there was not going to be room for us to invest our full check size (not to mention the pre-seed round was on the very high side of our valuation comfort). In situations like this, we still run our normal process to gain conviction to invest, but we choose to write a smaller check. This increases the number of companies in the fund, which we think is important for early-stage investors, while also ensuring we get exposure to the best-of-the-best and the majority of our capital is invested in core opportunities.
